Yeah, we hear it all the time, "I'm only going a few blocks, it's too much hassle to put on all my gear. Nothing is gonna happen anyways!"
So you jump on the bike with a jacket and jeans, maybe gloves, maybe not. After all, it's hot today, right?
But, shit happens.
For those of you who know me, might remember that I've been riding for about 35 years on the street (all legally) now, and if you've seen me ride you might even say "Yeah, he's pretty smooth. He sure handles those corners nicely!"
Well, shit happens. Even to me.
This afternoon, I was at my favorite dive shop, Langley Diving, where I had just finished servicing some regulators. I need to do a quick trip to costco, only a few blocks away, to pick up something for my wife.
Fortunately, I gave up those 'it's just a quick trip, I don't need all my gear' ideas a few years ago. Thankfully.
Leaving the parking lot, from a full stop, turning right onto the main road...
Schawing! Out goes the rear tire and the bike spins out from under me.
I bounced along the road a few feet and slid to a stop, and watched the bike do another sideways spin till it too stoped.
Damage? Broken right foot rest, broken right spool (for the stand), scrapes and scratches. Wore the frame slider down 1/2" or so...
So, was I okay? Surprisingly, yes and no.
Because I was wearing my full gear, leather pants, leather jacket, gloves, boots and of course helmet, I sustained minor damage.
My right hip is sore, as well as my right wrist, and I have a nice scrape on my right forearm also.
When I think of how much damage there was from getting a scrape from the inside of my jacket, I really have to wonder how bad it would have been with just a T-shirt and shorts...
Food for thought my friends!
p.s. it was a small patch of oil about the size of my palm.....
