Over the w/e I picked up my first speeding ticket on the bike (knock on wood). In the process of getting the ticket the officer pointed out that excessive speed will start carrying heavier penalties in September. Based on this I did a little research this morning and found out what the current penalty is. I thought this may be of interest to some (most) of the people on the board.
Currently your first excessive carries the following:
Ticket with penalty of $368 to $483
3 penalty points to be included in the annual penalty point premium calculation
Driver risk premium (penalty) of $320 a year for 3 years
Total cost minimum of $1,328 but could be a fair bit more depending on how many other points you have.
Starting in September new laws come into play that apparently make excessive speed a mandatory street racing ticket as well. This will add the cost of towing, impound fee and transport for you to get back from wherever you are. This will add another $400 or more to the $1,328 above bringing the total MINIMUM cost to over $1,700 for your first excessive.
I am not sure if there will be additional fines/penalties come September but if there are keep adding to the total.
Riding a sport bike is becoming less appealing........
