Went to Richmond yesterday to ride back home with my hubby after his long day at work. On Commerce Parkway, about to enter one of the office parking lots I encounter a woman in a silver Jetta who decides she can drive and text on her cell at the same time. Officers, are you paying attention?
Without looking up, she exits the parking lot on the wrong side of the lane and tries to make a left at the same time. I hit the brakes and stop hard - she keeps going and nearly t-bones an SUV going north on Commerce Parkway. He swerves, honks and she finally looks up. Trying to avoid her incredibly wide left turn, he swerves right and then deep lefts and heads straight for me. Instead of hitting the brakes, she turns hard and accelerates along with the SUV! In a hurry and texting!
Both come to a full, screeching stop 4 feet from my front tire. The woman appears flabbergasted. The SUV driver is pissed to say the least. He rolls down his driver window and has words with her - she's still hanging on to her cellphone! While he gestures and yells, she fingers him and takes off. By the look on her face she certainly thought the both of us were at fault in this situation.
PMS or just plain dumb-ass? I think maybe a combination of both was at work here. Moral of the story? You never know what's around the next corner... always ride as if everyone else out there is out to get you.
