I'm amazed at what the internet has done in terms of providing information
to help you save money.
It opens up the door to information never before at your fingertips.
I have used it countless times for motorcycle information... repair details
etc. It has taught me lots about mechanics, which has saved me lots
I'd like to share another story of this, to show just how much help an
unknown person can be to save you money.
I purchased a Pioneer SD533 rear projection HDTV in 2001. At that time,
it was the best 53" 1080i ready HDTV on the market for it's money. At
almost $4500, it was a premium priced product, but had features not
found in other brands. To this day it produces non HDTV cable feed
on a 53" platform that can't be matched in LCD or Plasma. Same with
A few months ago, the green CRT stopped working. The color of the TV
of course was the shits, and I started thinking about replacing it with
a plasma unit.
Before I dropped a couple grand on a new one, I started looking around
on home theater forums for information on my SD533. I came across
a thread about the green CRT not working, and I emailed the guy who
seemed to know something about it.
He sent me an email indicating what he thought was the problem, a
small hairling crack in solder on the CRT card drive where the "power
transistor and heat sink are located". He said to remove the card and
inspect for a hairline crack... and resolder carefully so as to not damage
So... I pull the front of the TV apart... and if you've ever seen inside
one of these rear projection TV's.. the amount of electronics are
staggering. I couldn't figure out how to remove the card, but I was
able to locate the heat sink and transistor...and upon inspection, it
did appear the solder had a small hairline crack in it.
I soldered upside down, managing to get a perfect solder on my first
attempt. Connected everything back up, and BINGO... Green CRT
Some random guy on the internet saved me $1500-$2500 that I
was going to drop replacing my TV I thought was shit.
Nobody wanted to come and repair, saying they are out of that
Life is good!!!!! What stories have you got like this??????????????
