Well I bought a DRZ listed on this forum last Sunday in Victoria. Rode it up north to Courtney, then took the ferry from Nanimo to Van, trucked it home to Kelowna and ripped around town until the next Saturday... when it blew up. Yeah, less than 500KM and 6 days after buying it, the head drops a valve. Not fun.
The bad news is that I need a new head, piston and cylinder. The good news is I have a friend in California sending me a head and a bunch of other parts for $200 plus shipping. Even worse news is that since it had a big bore kit on it and I was used to the power, it's what I'm going to want to replace it with, and those run from $350 to $600. Oh well.
The bike came with a full RS-3 Yoshi exhaust, RHC valves & springs, Cylinder Works 436 big bore kit, FCR-39MX carb, E model head & cams, re-worked wiring harness with kick start only, and some other bits. Very nice bike, if only the engine stayed together. I'm thinking that when the PPO re-did the head, they fucked it up and I paid the price.
For your delight, high res pics of carnage! I still don't know exactly what happend. Foreign matter in engine? Past rebuilt gone wrong? Valve clearances way out of wack? Valve simply failed? No clue, but at least I'll have a 'new' motor after this. My only conscern is that since it was forceful enough to put a hole in the piston, maybe the bottom end isn't so good. The conrod looked straight and had no play other than the usual side to side, so I'm hoping its ok.
