    Warming up a carbed bike

Is there any way to get around waiting eons for the damn thing to warm up? What happens if you just get up and go?

Do a head to toe pre-trip inspection, time seems to fly by when there is a checklist.

That's exactly what a lot of riders do, get up and go but take it really easy the first few minutes. Personally I always let my bikes properly warm up. In the mean time you can check your lights, tires etc and arrange your gear, it only takes a couple minutes.

If you MUST go before it warms up, just leave the choke on. But no WOT and as soon as it reaches a nice toasty temp take off the choke...

In fact I should not even be telling anyone since if you dont know what you are doing you could stall or cause the bike to flood if you do not know exactly what your doing...

So this is just a suggestion!!!!!

Just get ready 5 minutes earlier and let it warm up properly!!

What year is your Honda Shadow?

How long do you have your choke for, and at what ambient temperatures? How fast are you tapering off the choke?

Does the exhaust smell too "rich" during warm-up?

When was the last time your carbs were cleaned, and or your ignition system (spark plugs) was looked at?

On a '90 GSX-R 750, I start the bike on full choke, and then switch it to half choke after a few seconds. I can ride the bike usually after about 30seconds after start up. I may give it roughly a full minute just to get the oil circulating. And the choke is completely off soon after that while I am riding. Do not ride aggressively before the engine has reached operating temperature. The engine warms up faster under load. And the spark plugs really get carboned-up quite fast with choke on too long.

If an engine is not in good tune, it would take longer. Moreover, there is some variance on the choke-on time, depending on bike.

And it is a vicious circle. The longer the engine needs choke, the higher the likelihood the plugs will get fouled. And with weaker spark, the longer it takes to warm up, and get off choke.

If you are handy, pulled out your spark plugs and see how they look.

it's virtually new '06, just had 12K service on it. Choke full on to start, halfway for at least 5 minutes. If I wait less than that, usually almost stalls right when I'm pulling out of the alley. Did I screw it up already? The exhaust doesn't smell rich.
