Hey BCSB. I got a ticket on the way to work this morning and am wondering if it's worth contesting/what I can say/if I'm just wasting both mine and the officer's time.
Was going south on Granville (3 lanes each way)a little past 41st, traffics moving along at about 70-75. I'm in the left most lane and some guy ahead from the center moves over into my lane. For about 2 blocks I'm stuck behind them and they're slowing, speeding, etc (looking for a street?). Anyways, I have an opening so I merge to the center, and then gun it through (I'm sandwiched between 2 cars). BAM, speed trap. 40 over.
I explained that I was just passing someone I wasn't comfortable being behind (driving erratically)., and drove quickly thru because a)I was passing in the center lane and b) didn't want to sit in TWO blind spots. So the cop actually crossed out the $196 (I had to drive around the block to meet him, the ticket was written by the time I was there) and gave me a $138.
I'm still a little bit perturbed because I mean all traffic was moving quickly, I was just passing (though the "going with the flow" isn't exactly a good defense). My main concern is I'm a broke student, and I honestly can't guarantee no further tickets this year. I've calmed things down over the season but I really didn't try to speed today, it could happen again; and I sure as hell can't afford a $300+ DPP during school.
Is this ticket something I could contest under any grounds, or am I just wasting time? I mean in my mind the speed was needed to quickly get out into a safer lane position, it just happens that everyone's moving at you know, NOT 50kph, so adding speed to already speeding = bad....
Thanks guys, hope to see some responses after the game!
