thats crazy.....not only do you get perfect weather but you get paid overtime to wash your ride......
If you have to ask, NO you cant ride it!
".... yet another creative example of public employee pay abuses at taxpayer expense." - Brian Calle
Does this clown write for the tabloids??? I'm pretty sure if he wrote better articles he would get a better salary and stop bitchin about stupid things like, how much money Motorcycle cops make.
first of all:
It's hard enough to ride your bike around town without getting killed by a stupid cager, try policing on a bike; something dumb ass Calle doesn't understand nor respect.
I get paid extra at my job to wash my equipment.. Sure i got to keep it clean, but i do have to do the extra work once a month to give it the extra shine and make it easier the "wipe down" the rest of the time. Whats the big deal?? Oh.. that's right taxpayers money. Faqgaf Calle.
I have three words to describe this article. Bias, Prejudice and Incompetent.
$5600 to wash bikes? should have sent them here the local constablery would have done it for a timmies police special:
coffee double double and a boston cream
6 hours a month
72 hours a year
5600/72= $77.77 dollars an hour overtime
$51.85 and hour regular pay??
$51.85 x 160 (min.) hours a month = $8296.30 a month
8296.30 x 12 months = $99555. 56 a year??
Pretty sure no motorcycle cops don't get paid that anywhere in North America..... If they do, I wish I was 18 again and looking for a career...

But paying overtime to wash bikes is retarded. They could easily hire a lot boy for 40k a year, that washes all the bikes, save everybody some money.
I was using this wage calculator to confirm that....guess it is off.
Judging by your user name you would be the guy to know....

You must be a government / union employee.
do firefighters get extra OT for polishing and washing their trucks?
military is on a salary. I wish there was OT for those multi-day exercises

police officers depend on their bikes. They cannot do their job effectively if their bike fails. When an officer washes her bike, it gives her a chance to inspect the equipment that she will have to ride all day. Therefore, it is not asking too much to let them wash their own bikes.
about the overtime. The least stressful/strenuous part of a job is reserved for the end of the shift. since washing the bike is essential, it must be slotted in somewhere. for example, if you wanted 40 hours of policing per week from an officer plus the bike must be washed, then their will have to be overtime.
Would it make the public feel better if they decided to wash their bikes at the beginning of the shift and then get paid overtime to police the streets?
I don't mean any disrespect to any of my fellow members at BCSB by expressing my opinion. Also, If I'm a Government / Union employee its irrelavent to my opinion.
With that said, yes, I did read the whole article. And, No, I feel he did not do his homework. That's what irritates me about this article.
"One might assume that keeping equipment clean should be part of basic job functions, but in the world of public employees, where seemingly everything is negotiable, that is not the case."
So, does Calle asked the Newport Beach Police department how they manage their time? Nope. Calle went to the Sheriffs department to ask them. It's like asking a bouncer what a security guard does...
I've delt with bids and contracts with the city, and Calle is right that there's a lot of extra's included in contracts. But that's nothing new, and nothing to bitch about. IMO for 500$ more a month to each officer is sweeter than hiring one more officer JUST to wash bikes.
Loopsryder calculated 99600$ that's a whole new officer's whole salary. Think about that!
