If anyone is planning a trip down hwy 20 to Winthrop in the immediate future, I would strongly recommend against it.
There is about 30 km of chip sealing going on just outside of town. Delays of up to an hour, bicycles are being transported across that section by truck. There is a pilot car pacing people across the worst of it. For about 10 km, there is gravel all over the road, for about 20 km more there is a moderately clear track if you follow car wheel tracks.
By the time you get to the beginning of the construction, it's too late (if on a sportbike) to turn around to go back to the previous town due to fuel issues.
I went there Saturday. Punctured rear tire, no place to fix it in Winthrop. Towed to Winatchee and fixed next day.
The stuff they put on the road has some tar with a bunch of chips that are quite sharp. When the tire was inspected, there was no evidence of any metal. Likely a puncture caused by the chips.
So check road reports before heading out and avoid that stretch of hwy 20 until this crap is cleared up.
BTW, no problems on Hwy 2 from Winatchee to Everett.
