This is not exactly a photo heavy report (I didn't take any photos - oops! Too busy riding )
But I was chatting with someone who said I should post up the route I took today.
If you want to get to or from Nelson (from the Lower Mainland), I did the ride today and hit 5 of BC's best roads back to back to back.... I don't have my DH book with me, but I know these 5 roads all rank pretty well there too.
I left Nelson just before 7 am:
Nelson to Kaslo, 31A to New Denver, over to Nakusp to Needles Ferry & Hgy 6 (Monashee Rd) to Lumby, bypass downtown Vernon (follow the 97 west signs) to the top of Westside Rd - to Kelowna, then Coquihalla to Merritt and take 5A to Princeton – then the Hope/Princeton home. The only slab in the Coquihalla from West Kelowna to the 5A turnoff, and the Hope to Vancouver parking lot known as Highway1.
31A, Hgy 6, Westside Rd, 5A and Hope/Princeton are all fabulous roads – it is treat to get to ride them all in one day.
The order you ride them is also my ranking of the roads:
31A - Kaslo to New Denver is the best road I have ever ridden in BC
Highway 6 - the Monashee Road - probably the second best road in BC, especially if you are first off the ferry
Westside Rd - It has been 3 or 4 years since I have ridden Westside, and the pavement is a bit rougher in spots than I remember, but still an amazing road... that demands your full attention
5A - Merritt to Princeton is not as twisty as the others, but still a great road with very little traffic.
Hope - Princeton - always a nice way to end a ride, but what's with all the semi traffic on a Sunday afternoon?
From the Grand Hotel in Nelson to my place in Kits, 914 km’s and about 11 hours, with a lunch stop at Timmies nr Vernon.
I know I am not the first person to do this route, but just a reminder that it is a great route and a excellent alternative to Highway 3.
