Interesting situation has popped up. Wifes side of the fam.
Before reading on, I'm looking for solid opinions on what to do here, and will likely be showing this thread to the people involved - including possibly the boys mother, so please keep the sarcasm and the language to a bare minimum.
Thought about putting in the New Riders section, but thought it might get more play here.
Her cousin is 16, just getting his drivers license. Pretty responsible kid, works a bit, does well in school I think. Generally a good kid. Pretty typical teenager, plays hard too. Probably a little more daring and outgoing than most kids I would think.
He's been bugging me (and his dad) about getting into biking. He's never really ridden that I know of. Maybe dirtbikes a bit, but would have been a while ago. Doesn't currently have or ride one.
Exactly how do I tell him (and his dad who wants to get back into riding after a 10+ year hiatus) that his kid getting a bike for the road at this point isn't really a great idea?
He's said that he and his dad plan to go take lessons together.
Now, I have to point out that at 17, I had my licence (this was 1990/91 so a different time for sure) and ridden a Vincent all the way to California with my dad and a few friends, and done a bit of other riding as well. I rode dirtbikes around our property since I was 9 so atleast knew the basics of getting on and starting and stopping etc....
Thought about telling him to get a dirtbike first, and go play on that for a while.
Anyways, keep it constructive please, and let me know how to handle this situation. The kids looking for my approval I think.
