With old age approaching and a subsequent desire to be as uncool, uncouth, and generally as indifferent as possible, I find myself looking at the Vstom as the embodiment of all three; the epitome of self-loathing, materialized in a utilitarian, 2-wheeled form. And I kinda want one.
I love my DRZ and it's innate hooliganism, be it in the dirt or on the street, but I miss having a 6th gear, enough torque to lift the front, and highway stability - getting to the fun roads means at least 20 minutes on the highway. I miss my RSVR and the bottomless, frenetic torque - easily the most lovable engine ever crafted, wrapped in the sexiest bodywork to come out of Italy. I miss the batshit-crazy power and intuitive handling of my K6 Gixxer thousand. I'd say I missed my 06 R6, but it was/is the shittiest streetbike ever made...but I digress. I've looked for something that can tick the boxes of as many of these traits as possible, and I keep coming back to the Strom. I understand the 650 is a fantastic bike and frequently makes appearances on different magazine's top 10 lists to the chagrin of it's bigger brother, I'm finding myself leaning towards the 1000. I understand insurance will be a bit more, and fuel economy suffers a little, but are there any other solid reasons for not going with the bigger bike? Weight claims only put it at 20 or so pounds more, which is pretty negligible for an adventure bike. I'm reading up on ADVrider, but like any comparison thread there, it kinda rambles into the 40 page range, and I'm looking for Cliffnotes. 650 or 1000 - which, and why?
