I was hoping that I could get some advice on what it really takes to get into riding track days and casual racing. I'd like to get an idea of the time commitment involved and some of the costs.
Background. I've been riding since I was little; started on dirtbikes. Bought my first sportbike (Yamaha R6) when I was 17. I did a couple track days at the Spokane Raceway quite a few years ago. I got out of riding when I went to university because I couldn't afford it. I still rode a bit; just borrowing my brothers bike. When I finished university, I bought a Ducati 848 and rode that for a season. I sold it after I ended up in jail for a speeding ticket and bought a car. After that, I sort of learned that sportbikes belong on the track where they can be rode properly without breaking the law or putting oneself in excess danger. I also work out of town a lot (geologist) so I was away for most of the riding season.
Anyways, I haven't had a bike for about a year now and it's been killing me. I'm finally in a position where I think I could afford to start getting into track days at first and hopefully into racing after that if I'm enjoying track days.
My plan is to buy a used track bike and an enclosed trailer. I'd like to outfit the trailer with the tools and accessories that I'd need for a trackday weekend and hopefully have some space for working on the bike as well. I live in an apartment so I don't have access to the shop. I would just tow the trailer down to different trackday events and go from there. I figure I could get a nice setup for about $10,000.
What sort of community support is there for trackday riders in Vancouver? I don't know much in the way of setting a bike up and it would be nice to meet people to travel to events with.
The other concern I have is about the availibility of track day events around the area. I'm very used to travelling so driving for 12+ hours to Thunder Hill wouldn't bother me for example. I'm a geologist so I spend quite a bit of time in the field and usually work a 4 on, 2 off rotation. I can move that around a bit to make certain events but, for the most part, I would be looking for track events on the days that I'm home. Basically, if one is willing to travel around, is there pretty much an event SOMEWHERE every weekend or every second weekend?
Anything else I should know before jumping into this?
