I know a lot of guys on here have a truck as a daily driver/winter beater/bike hauler. I used to own a 91 Nissan D21, which Rawdonflyer owns now. I've greatly missed having that little bastard around, so I've decided to buy another truck. Only thing I want different this time, is an extended cab.
I've decided to broaden my horizons this time around, and went and looked at brand new trucks! Bottomfeeder and I headed out into the great slime pit that is new car dealerships. I'm a Nissan fan, so we started at Morrey in Burnaby this morning. They had exactly 3 Frontiers on the lot. All crew cab, V6 4x4 automatics. Exactly opposite of what I want. I want a basic truck. A new version of what I used to own. 4 cylinder(or small V6), manual trans, 2wd, with extended cab and AC. Seems that Nissan will only special order that for you now, and it will cost $26000 before taxes. YIKES!
Next stop was Coastal Ford. Sales guy was great. Young dude, no pressure, and showed me almost exactly what I asked for. 2011 Ranger extra cab, manual trans, 2wd. Not exactly what I wanted, as it's the 4L, and it has a pretty tall step up into the box. Took it for a test drive. Drove like every other Ranger I've ever driven. Nothing wrong with it, but not exactly what I want. Price is attractive though, at $20k out the door after rebates. I was getting a bit warm and fuzzy, until the sales manager came to "help" the sales guy close the deal. Manager was the single slimiest human I have ever met in my life. Not a chance in hell would help put even 1 dollar in this guy's pocket. Puke.
Pattison Toyota was my next stop. Tacoma is a fucking joke. Ugly as shit, tiny inside, and $23000 for a base model with nothing in it. No rebates, and not a single 4 cylinder model in the country. Sales guy claims to have never sold a manual Tacoma, and never seen a 4 cylinder. Says it's a special order for commercial applications. Wondered why anyone would want something so basic. He was a tulip, and didn't even have a brochure. Next.
Pacific Nissan was my final stop. Also no 4 cylinder 5 speeds on the lot, and they claim to have never carried them. Special order only apparently. Nice sales staff, and if I decided to buy a Frontier, I would give these guys the business. They also let me know that the 2012 Frontier has a $5000 rebate right now. So, it's $21000 before taxes, and comes with power windows, locks, and AC for that price. Not bad, but seems to be none to test drive, so I left feeling a little disenchanted.
Where does this leave me? Looking for another D21. Next one has to be king cab, 5 speed, either the 2.4L or the 3.0L V6. I figure for a couple grand, I can have a great little truck that costs peanuts to run, and with a few well placed suspension mods, will easily haul a bike is needed, or anything else that I would ever need it for. And according to Rawdonflyer, the gas mileage is so awesome, I only have to fill it up once a year!
So, what do you guys have for trucks, and why? Offer me some other opinions.
