i sent this email out to friends a few days ago and wanted to share it here for everyone because for some of you i don't have an email address.
It's that time of year when many of us look back on the events in our lives over the past year and and contemplate what we'd like to see happen in the year ahead. I'd like to suggest that every day, no matter what we have going on in our lives that we make a point of doing a few simple things:
1. Every day make a point to do one little thing just for yourself, something that you love, something that brings you joy, even if only for a few minutes. It could be something simple as having a piece of chocolate, doing a crossword puzzle or something that requires a bit more effort like getting out for a bike ride. It can be something different every day, just make sure you take the time to put a smile on your own face. If you're happy and feel good about yourself, chances that energy is going to rub off on someone else and make their day better as well.
2. Every day make a point of doing something that will put a smile on a stranger's face. Sometimes all it take is a simple gesture like holding a door open or even just smiling and saying hello to help someone else feel better about their day. It's amazing how much it can lift your own spirits as well.
3. Every day take 10-15minutes first thing in the morning to do some exercise - yes, every day, first thing. A good suggestion is to do something like the Five Tibetan Rights, or you can put together a simple routine of exercises like squats, push-ups, sit-ups, supermans, planks and even arm exercises using resistance tubing. The amount of effort you put into it actually doesn't matter that much, it's just about getting your body moving and is a great way to start your day. If you're unsure of what to do stop by your local community centre gym or even search on google for simple at home workout routines.
4. Every day try and learn something new or challenge your mind with a puzzle/problem of some sort that is fun or interesting. Whether it's from reading a news article or just randomly searching through the dictionary and discovering a new word, challenging your mind will help keep you more engaged in the world around you.
And finally, take some time to let the people that are really close to you know how important they are. For those of you with families every day hug your child and kiss your spouse, connect with them on meaningful level even if it's only for a few mintues. Let them know that you don't take them for granted. Take the time call/email close friends and family, even with just a simple message to pass along some new thing you learned - you don't have to do it every day, for but do it often enough so that people know they matter to you.
