edit: Coles notes, since the long version got way long:
- went to view bike posted on here
- 8000 more kms than posting said
- lied about it being a rebuild
- didn't mention it was an out-of-country import
- tried to sell it to me with an outstanding VI on it
- wanted to get the inspection done at his friend's shop
- decided he didn't want to sell me the bike once he was called out/found out on all this.
I've been dealing with this guy for the last week, and he's nothing if not shady as heck. I went out to tsawassen to view his '03 sv650 for sale. It seemed like a good deal, $2500 for a 2nd gen SV with somewhat high kms, listed at 30,000 but with a new clutch. He was clear that it was a little scuffed up from P.O. dropping it, but explicitly said "not a rebuild" when I asked via email.
Anyways, got out there to check the bike and my experience went like this:
- first warning sign, the bike had over 8000 more kilometers on it than his ad said.
Alright, no biggy...slight mistake in the ad...ended up calling him the next day, made an offer, got a deal sorted out.
Met up with him the next day (A sunday) to sign the papers and take it home, got the registration in my hands and...what's that? Rebuild.
I say, "you told me this bike wasn't a rebuild.."
him, "i don't think i said that..."
me, "pretty sure I've got it right here in an email", and as I proceed to look it up he's saying "well, i'm not gonna deny I might've said that..". and I show him on my phone. Now, I'm not adverse to rebuilds necessarily, but I don't love being lied to. He tried to claim ignorance, "I just never checked". But...come on now. He pre-filled out the transfer form and purposely didn't check anything in the rebuild section.
He tried to leave early, before the transfer had actually completed since he'd already signed the paper. That was probably because of the next thing I was about to discover. He left, and we continued the transfer, and discovered the bike had an outstanding V.I. on it, which meant it couldn't even be transferred into my name. Again, he claimed ignorance, saying he didn't know it had to be dealt with before selling. Seemed more like he wanted to stick me with dealing with it. At this point I also noticed that the bike was an out-of-country import, which he also failed to mention.
So after ALL this, perhaps stupidly, I'm still interested in the bike, cause it seems like a good deal for the dollars. So he says he'll get the bike inspected "at his buddy's shop" the next day (monday), and then get in touch with me again.
He texts me monday saying "shop's closed monday, have to wait till tomorrow". Fine, whatever...I know there's some shops open even though many are closed, but...meh. Tuesday is fine.
Tuesday afternoon rolls around, haven't heard anything, so I text him, and it goes like this:
1pm - me: "Hey Damon, any word what's happening with the inspection?"
him - "in a meeting till 3 i'll let you know"
So I wait till 5pm, still heard nothing. Text him again:
me: "anything happening there? did you manage to get the bike in for inspection after your meeting?"
him: "just to tired to go in long day tomorrow"
me, concluding that it likely won't happen tomorrow either then, ask:
"okay, when is it likely to happen, in that case?"
him: "it's not like macdonalds you need to book it and today they cancelled on me. when it's done I'll let you know if you don't want to wait then just go get another bike."
me: "I was simply asking when. I don't know your schedule, no need to get defensive. I'm interested in the bike, and just trying to sort out a timeline."
him: "in fact i don't want to sell to you so deals off good luck buddy"
So at that point I actually tried calling him a couple times, he didn't pick up. So I texted calling him a chickenshit too scared to just have a conversation. Meh...I was annoyed by all the chronic bullshit out of his mouth.
This got way long...congrats if you made it this far.
Anyways, this guy currently has three bikes for sale on here. They MAY be just fine automobiles, but I wouldn't trust anything this guy says. Get your inspections, do your checks. That's all.
