First real ride of the year... am I getting old or have my tastes changed?
I finally got to go for the first real ride of the season with a few colleges from work to blow off some steam on Monday. We must have looked funny as a group going down the road with a SM leading a Harley followed by a VStrom and KLR.
Guys on Harleys sometimes just make me laugh... After mocking my SXV as a “dirt bike” I guess he thought he would show me who’s the boss off a green light by hammering off on his glide. The sound was deafening but the performance was lacking. It was comical catching up to him by second gear and then passing him all while wheeling and looking over my shoulder to emphasize my point. He did put up a valiant effort in the curves with sparks galore decking it out around Stave Lake before giving up to cruise a beach somewhere in search of a parrot.
I actually tried out a VStrom and was really surprised as it was pretty fun to ride. It handled decent, had ok punch from the 650 and was really comfy; I just found the brakes to be horrible. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t see myself giving up owning a superbike for the performance but for an additional bike I think it would be pretty handy. I have seen several riders such as Chia keep up really well on those things in areas where I thought they would be ten minutes behind.
So am I getting old or have I been potentially bitten by the “Adventure Bike Brigade”? I don’t know about doing a ton of off-roading (would rather have a KTM) but as an alternative when the weather is lousy or going for a distance I can see the appeal. Load up some bags, turn on the heated grips, look through a windshield... oh man I must be getting old?!
