SO I go for a nice stroll along Jericho/Spanish Banks this evening, to cool down a bit after a smoking hot morning ride today ... and what should I see but the beach absolutely packed with people picnicing and playing Bacci ball, volley ball and such ... So many people that the parking lots were at capacity likely before noon and people had parked hundeds of cars along the other side (the ditch side) of Marine Drive there, the same side where all the "No Parking" signs are.
Some meter maid (or 'meter man') had tickets the entire row of cars, and then the tow trucks were hauling them away two-by-two ... dozens of cars.
So I have to say/ask, that it seems incredibly unfair to me, for the City of Vancouver to keep stuffing more and more hi-rises and more and more condos into the city core ... bringing in more people and more cars with each incarnation. ALL of those people have both a need, as well as a right, to recreate along with everyone else ... and this IS a car-centered culture, as much as Gregor wishes to re-engineer it into an 'other' (there is no alternative transportation means available to get to Spanish Banks).
Yet the city has stuffed all those new people (New Vancouverites) into this city over the recent twenty years ,... but has not provided one iota more parking along the Spanish Banks recreation area (since what - 1940) ... which, I should add, is one of Vancouver's ONLY popular and accessible family-type recreational/beach area.
Isn't all of that like inviting the new kids to your party, only to sucker punch them and give them a black eye when they aren't looking up at you ... ?! The whole thing irked me, and left a bad taste in my taster.
PS: I wasn't parked there.
