Hey just heard about this today.
Build an updated Avro Arrow as an alternative to purchasing the F35 fighter to replace our F18 fleet was actually proposed to the gov't back in 2010. And "... among the project's champions is one of Canada's top soldiers, retired Maj.Gen. Lewis MacKenzie."

Even though the re-surrection of the Arrow program is pretty unlikely to happen, still, seeing the news story and old footage of the Arrow got me pretty excited. Economically, it seems feasible, but politically, think our American allies would put up road blocks and oppose any steps we take toward building our own fighter jets.
It may be a very small glimmer of hope to see the Arrow built, but I am still pretty excited about the possibilities (no matter however remote).
