I thought there was a thread about this somewhat recently, but can't dig it up, so here goes:
Just had an interesting scenario. Working from home today, sitting at the computer, when I hear a key in my door. (No one has keys to my place except me.) I get up and walk to the door, peek through the eye hole - no one. I've got laundry running so I start thinking I'm imagining things, when a sweet old lady with a little dog in her hand appears in the hallway and seems to go for the elevator - I walk away, and a second later hear the key in my door again. This time I open the door, politely ask what the fuck she's doing, and get some story about her son giving her keys, her not being sure "how they work", and some other incomprehensible bull. She's thinking maybe her son is on a different floor, etc.
Whatever, I say no worries and close the door. Now I'm thinking back... what kind of mother doesn't know what floor her son lives on and what side of the building his apartment is? Sure, she might have alzheimer's or something similar, but the whole thing just gave me a bad vibe. Not to mention that the fob in her hand wouldn't have let her get up to any floor other than the one it's activated for. Add that to the recent break in to the storage lockers we had a few weeks ago, and I'm getting paranoid.
So that leads to: what alarm company do you use/recommend? I do have home insurance, but wouldn't mind paying $20-30 a month for an extra peace of mind. I don't want/need motion sensors (two pets in the house), but I do want sensors for front door being opened (and balcony, too). Another caveat is that I don't have a landline, and it sounds like some alarm companies require that?
Apartment is already pre-wired for alarms.
Instant alerts via SMS would be great.
