I recently imported two racebikes from the US. One was over fifteen years old and so it was exempt from the RIV registration process under Class D.
The other bike is exempt under class G "work vehicle and others", with "others" including competition vehicles, according to RIV itself. When I explained this to the customs agent filling out the form, he said that he could not write it in as a competition vehicle, he must import it as it is, which in this case, is a vehicle intended for street use, as indicated by its title. He said that I was to take the matter up with RIV.
When I called RIV, however, they said that they only process information and are unable to change information directly. If I want to stop receiving letters from RIV telling me to register the bike with them already, I need to go back to customs and get them to acknowledge the motorcycle as Class G.
I then asked what would happen if I just ignored the letters, and they said nothing much. After a period of two years, Transport Canada might decide to "take action," but it was not specified what that action would be.
So my question is, has anyone ever successfully imported a racebike under class G, and if so how did you pull it off?
