anyone craft something themselves outside of their normal line of work and proud enough to show the masses? I just built a dining table, ok more like a non attached picnic table out of old growth fir from a 80 year old school demo in comox. the joists were 3"x13"x33' rough cut. we cut some lengths and i rolled home with some 6' and 8' footers and decided to craft. no real experience in woodworking but i did build a sweet heated 24 x 30 shed 2 years ago so how hard could it be? approx 60 hours into this bitch and have killed many brain cells from the stain and poly treatment. built the frame underneath from the off cuts taking 1.5" off to make 12" wide planks. left a rough edge on the edge of the table and benches. went counter height to suit the house and used 4x4"s' for legs with cross members yet to be attached. should have used 6x6"s' but it already weighs about 200 lbs. most impressive thing is i've been manhandling this beast solo which added in with the beer and meds has provided some laughs. i bought a router to get the joints done, burnt out my fresh new ryobi $120 router out in 6 hours. fir ftw.
