Dark Side of Japan: 2014 Yamaha MT-09 Three-Cylinder Street Bike

A couple of weeks ago, Yamaha Europe released a video called “Dark Side of Japan”teasing a new street bike it claimed would “change the sport motorcycle world.” Today, the company revealed its new model, introducing a new naked sportbike powered by a “Crossplane” three-cylinder engine called the MT-09.

The 2014 Yamaha MT-09 is powered by a new 847cc three-cylinder engine first teased at Intermot last year. According to Yamaha, the MT-09′s engine produces 113.4 hp at 10,000 rpm and 64.5 ft-lb. at 8500 rpm. By comparison, the Yamaha FZ8 and its 779cc Inline-Four engine claims 104.7 hp at 10,000 rpm and 60.5 ft-lb. at 8000 rpm. With a claimed wet weight of 414 pounds, the MT-09 is also 51 pounds lighter than the FZ8.

Why did I think of dnaspark when I saw the "Dark Side of Japan" line?

I would be a little pissed right now if I had bought an FZ8 this year.

We may never see it in NA, so many of Europe's nakeds never cross the pond.

Not sure of I really like the style, has some Buell-esque design ques that I see

I think it's that whole rear seat section.

I think the FZ8 looks much better, meaner, better lines, better front and rear sections:

The Cross Plane Crank is made more motorcycles (or any race bred vehicle). Properly tuned you get the benefits of a VTwin with a the top end of I4. I don't know why Yamaha is waiting so long to move the Cross Plane Crank into their other models and not just the R1.

I agree that the red/white combo looks stunning. I was talking in just HP numbers, because we know that is all that counts.

Goddamn am I ever sick of car/bike promo videos that try far too hard to sell a lifestyle and far too little to sell the bloody machine.

If I wanted to plunk down money for a lifestyle I'd shop at Trev Deeley.

I do like it the FZ-8 and it is on my short list for the next bike (Street Triple and Shiver the other two), now what to do ?

Wait until used FZ-09 or get a deal on a FZ-8

Interesting... I still like the look of the FZ8 especially in the red and white.

The tail is very Buell'ish looking but I guess if someone got a fender eliminator it would be a very minimal.

Saw a really great looking pre-owned FZ8 at Penticton Yamaha on Saturday. Black, very clean, PR3's, panniers, Rizoma mirrors, Pazzo levers and frame sliders. Didn't ask the mileage, but the price was only $6500.
Had to leave before I bought it.

Hmm! Interesting to see what other models get to share that engine.
