Local Tuning genuis breaks 200+mph at Bonneville
Tom Mellor has broken another record in his class, running a 44 yr old pushrod Triumph Trident. Amazing when you think about it.
Here's a video of him breaking the record in 2011:
Showed up in style!!
I find it funny that the picture makes the salt flats look like a bumpy road.
The Roller has been his tow car for many years now.
If you've never been there - the salt flats is a very bumpy road - even the "track" that has been smoothed.
Tom is running a bored and stroked 1000 cc engine this year that ran 200+
I've been out on the salt twice, once on my 1200gs Beemer, and once on my mountain bike and class a motorhome. I was quite surprised how rough it is,,,,,,it's not just the high altitude tuning problems they have to deal with, the surface is "variable" .
Regarding his current machine, his 1000cc engine is built to incredible physical levels especially the bottom end structure at the crank case and crankshaft support. He's shown me evidence of many donor engines that have expired violently on the dyno, one last spring that flew flame and shrapnel all over the dyno out on River road.
