OTTAWA - In what has been called a tragic case of misidentification, four Canadians were killed when an American fighter jet accidentally dropped at least one bomb on them during a live-fire training exercise in Afghanistan.
Eight others were injured in the blast, with two in life-threatening condition.
The U.S. National Guard F-16 fighter jet dropped either one or two 250-kilo bombs during a late-night training exercise near Kandahar Wednesday. The incident took place around 1:55 a.m. local time, 14 kilometres south of the Kandahar Airport.
The victims were members of the Third Battalion of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, based in Edmonton. No identities have been released pending notification of family members.
