I'm planning a long trip in the US this May-June, and for the first time I'm gonna take a little laptop. I do not run a GPS and I do no intend to - I enjoy the planning phase of the trip, using an Atlas and a variety of on-line sources pre-trip, and I do not find navigation outsiide of cities problematic sans-GPS once I'm rolling. Inside cities, I can rely on my smart phone.
But, I intend to load an 'off-line' map system into the laptop, so that I can access 'local' detailed info, even when I'm not on an internet connection.
A friend who is a pretty organized traveller has suggested Skobbler, but so far as I can see, that only runs on i-pads and Android devices.
Does anyone have any experience with a map system that will run on Windows 8?
(I'll do my research, of course, and google maps works fine for me when there is a connection, but the issue is off-line... and the experience of others is always a boon.)
Thanks, Cheers, Don
