Harley Davidson seems to exemplify all legendary companies that have become bogged down by bureaucracy intended to keep them at the cutting edge. There is a strong sense of tradition, but the spirit of ingenuity which originally propelled them to the top of the market is suppressed by a corporate culture which focuses on profitability. Like Willie Davidson said to Kevin Cameron of Cycle World, "Harley couldn't build a bike like [the XLCR] today, The committees and focus groups wouldn't allow it". There is so much passion and originality in the H-D community, but the company itself won't take any risks. The last forward-thinking designer at H-D was Eric Buell. Someone needs to realize that the people who made Harley legendary, if they were to come back today, sure as hell wouldn't ride Harleys.
"The problem is, the natural balanced position for a motorcycle is on it's side."
Look up the ownership of the company in/for the last 35 years. Rather inspiring if you ask me.
One thing in their favor will always be: When you walk into a HD dealership Everyone you talk to knows what a bike is. It is their bread and butter, they eat sleep shit and think bikes. (maybe t shirts and caps too as they make more money than the bikes do )
For every other "Bike" dealer it is a side line. Generators, dirt bikes, lawn mowers, cars, weed wackers,4wheelers and on and on and on.
There are old riders and there are bold riders. There aren't any old, bold riders.
Ride safe folks.
love it... a triumph and a guy who hated Harleys.. LOL

Don't be so hard on good ol' HD. There's always going to be a need for ill fitting black t-shirts, bandanas, ass-less leather pants, watches, sunglasses, boots, jackets, bubble gum machines, pool tables, pickup trucks, chrome,,,,anything, etc.
Harleys are not bad bikes. They aren't sport bikes and i dont think they ever pretend to be.
I have never ridden one but every harley owner i know loves his bike which speaks volumes to me.
I wouldn't mind owning one............................................... ... one day. :P I think their vrod model is a pretty cool.
Ha Ha... You would think pipes sticking out on both sides of the bike would have caught somebodies attention.
Maybe another example of the "suits" only understanding what is written on a piece of paper...
listen to me or i will eat you're bacon
They realize that they could achieve more performance out of a liquid cooled motor... and other things... but the aesthetics of the bike are primary. The mehanics of the bike function fine... the inherent design limitations are the same across the cruiser genre.. and if you take that for what it is, you can really enjoy the bikes.
Another HUGE plus with Harley is that you can own the bike for a VERY, VERY long time. You don't burn up your cbr1000rr and then order a crate motor to stick in it. You can ride your Harley... maintain it... and if the motor packs it in, you can just bolt a new one in and bob's your uncle.
Long Live Shervin Of The North!
