Please feel free to post this as a sticky. I'm not sure if Open Forum is the right place, so feel free to move it to the events forum.
The first thing you have to realise about BCSB is that is doesn't, in any way, shape or form, approximate reality. It is an odd place with a fairy complex social order that puts one in mind of an asylum run by the lunatics. Marketing on BCSB is therefore a completely different process, so if you aren't good at dealing with conflict or presenting yourself as a complete nutter who's lost the plot, you may want to keep to what you learned in Marketing 101 and will probably have an adequate turnout from print ads in the local media.
If you follow the advice offer in this piece, please note that you do so at your own risk. Some of the suggestions will result in some pretty extreme behavior, from receiving a banning to being threatened with assault. Having said this, if you do get assaulted, not fighting back (although very hard to do) is the preferred course of action, as you will then be able to press assault charges and in our legal system, this will result in the vindication of knowing your assailant will receive the benefit of mandatory Court ordered counseling with a registered therapist. Ultimately, you could do some real good for a mentally unstable person and help them to get their lives back on track, possibly saving their significant other and/or children from an abusive encounter. This will make you feel really good in the long run.
Now that you've been warned, proceed at your own risk.
The first step is to find someone in the community that will help you to deliver a very high drama rating. BCSB threads require a very high drama rating to stay at the top of the list. Picking a fight with a complete stranger on the interwebz is a good start. If it's someone you know, even better. On the basis that everyone is fair game, the more high profile your Drama partner is, the better result you will get. Higher profile targets - er, I mean Drama Partners may result in a visit to the Banhammer. Don't let this discourage you, this is actually a sign that you are on the right track and that the Moderators are willingly volunteering themselves as your Drama Partners too. You really want as many drama partners as you can get because this keeps the thread at the top of the list.
Once you've selected your Drama Partner, it is very important that they have no idea that they have been given this honour. The seasoned veterans of the membership decimating, BCSB Troll Wars of 2010 can smell a "BCIT Market Research project" a mile off and simply step back, secure in the knowledge that they will have some entertaining reading.
Your ideal candidate will have a very high opinion of themselves, display massive ego and score in the top 10 percentile of the standardised tests for Narcissism and Social Obliviousness.
TIP: If someone has already behaved this way and it aligns with your timing, you can rely on cross posting and thread drift and sometimes market your event over several threads simultaneously. This is a good thing because it often results in a whole bunch of people getting Banhammered.
There really isn't any need for name-calling, especially not directly. Keep your insults general and remember, the "Report Post" function is guaranteed to elicit a visit from several Moderators, affectionately referred to by the Marketing Department as Moderoaches. This is due to their ability to suddenly fill an entire room the second the light of intellect goes out and magically disappear the instant that the light of intellect returns. At the time of this writing, no Moderoaches have been harmed in any way and the general consensus is that they are 4th dimensional constructs of a "Matrix" like causality.
Once you post your first response, be patient. Like cold calling, this is a numbers game. The objective is to polarise and engage if you want to hit thread views in the thousands. It isn't at all about the responses. You can generally rely on someone to disagree with anything posted on here, so that isn't necessarily a sign that your marketing effort is working. The key number in gauging effectiveness is the number of thread views. This is your audience and you want this in the thousands.
At this point, a carefully crafted message to PhillipB is the next step. Be rude and dismissive in demanding the unreasonable and ensure that your requests are not possibly achievable. This will force him into a no-win situation where taking action against you is foolish. He will, instead, communicate sternly with the Moderators and "pass the buck" to them for resolution by bringing their fitness as Moderators into question. This will silence the Moderators, causing confusion and bringing the "crickets" out to play.
At all costs, ignore the "crickets" as if they do not exist. These are seriously problematic members. They are the true believers in BCSB. They eat, drink, live and breathe BCSB, often logging on within seconds of waking up in the morning and logging on again every chance they get until bedtime. They often delay bedtime in the hopes that some further pearl will fall from the magical BCSB, validating their existence and giving them a reason to spend one more day alive. Your actions so far have enraged them to the point that they are quite likely to commit a most horrific act in defense of BCSB. You have literally just taken a dump in the Holy Grail.
Instead, reply generally and in a calm but extremely condescending manner to someone else about the most trivial thing you can respond to. Stir and poke, poke and stir, disappear for a few days (not more than 2) and return and selectively repeat any of the above steps at random. for the duration of your marketing effort. At no point start a retirement thread unless you really are committed to never logging in again and - let's face it - why would you if you have made it this far?
In closing, never apologise. This is considered a sign of weakness and you are no more required to apologise than the other members are required to wear their "big girl panties" when logging on. Those you consider friends will always have your back.
