I missed a chance to join a couple friends for a loop on the Island last Sunday, and that has been on my mind ever since. The weather looks to be improving into the weekend: some fog clearing Sat morning, sunny Sunday - so I'm feeling like taking my chances and going! The road from Sooke to P Renfrew seems likely to be damp, but I'm hoping the rest of the trip will dry out.
First ferry (7am) outa Tsawwassen Sat morning means on the road ex-Vancouver by 6am latest.
Day 1: Swartz Bay > Sooke > Port Renfrew > Lake Cowichan > Parksville > Ucluelet. Motel overnite there or Tofino. About 450kms 8-9hrs.
Day 2: If it's super-nice, it might be pleasant to wander on Long Beach, then just ride back to Nanaimo and get the ferry home, but I'm keener to ride north and out west to Gold River before turning back home. That'd be about 575kms 8 -10 hrs.
Ferry fare is 16.25/person plus 26.65/bike, so $42.90 each way.
Schedule home is either 5:20 or 7:30 ex Nanaimo.
Anyone feeling chancey enough to join me?
(p.s. or the whole trip could be reversed, starting thru Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo, going north, etc... decision later...)
