Well, if taking a truck and trailer is the wrong way down taking a bike down must be the right way.
Nothing like a morning run to beat the enthusiasm out of riders before a long trip. We timed crossing Pacific Highway at 6am when one booth open turns into all booths open and rolled through without a wait.
The rich scent of cut lumber greets us as we cross from Longview into Oregon and the beginning of our ride.
Five supermoto and local sportbikes sit on the side of the road and pull out ready for their local ride providing a brisk escort through the twisties of timber road. Timber road has a couple nice sections banked with 10-mph and 20-mph sections twisting along the river.
Our first stop is Tillamook Cheese Factory and it is astonishing how busy the place is any day of the year. Thereís a sample station with most flavors of cheese to coerce you into trying their full selection of flavors including a cafe with their most popular item being a grilled cheese.
Mid-day on a weekend isnít the best time to roll down the Oregon Coast yet it allows one to take in the scenery and sites along the way before taking the roller coaster known as route 299 inland. Itís a bit of a jaunt down route 20 to 34 but well worth the trip to reach the Siuslaw twisties in from Waldport.
At this point a sleepless night and a long day is having itís effect and the cruise to the Oregon Sand Dunes is appreciated.
