quality of stuff was less than Walmart, and that's pretty low. Prices were higher. Totally unlike the Targets south.

My dear old mom used to visit the old Zellers store to purchase a few incidentals once in a while ... said they offered great value for some odd household items and such.
She went to Target once, and never went back - couldn't stand it.
I define Hell as having to ride back and forth from Blaine to Tijuana on I - 5 in perpetuity.
Funny that. My one TARGET experience was pretty ironic. One of my daughters wanted to go there, so I was dutifully wandering around the store and noticed that they sell Baby Bell light cheese. I picked up a package and noticed that the best before date was two days away. I looked at all of the packages and roughly 10 packages were all about to expire in two days. Another 10 or so packages expired in a six weeks as is fairly usual when purchasing cheese.
So I went to the till and asked them if they were interested in moving this cheese at a discounted price:
Staff: "No Sir, we can't do that"
Me: "you do realize that you have a day and half left before it's unlawful to sell this cheese?"
Staff: "I'm sorry sir, it's against our policy to do discounts"
Me: "Oh dear, that's a lot of cheese to throw away on Tuesday"
Fire sales! Probably not, but they may actually have some descent deals if they try to get rid of all the stock.
I guess Walmart and CT are too much competition.
I miss Zellers too. And Woolco, Marshall Wells, Saans, Woodwards ... black forest cakes.
Dood your all over these store closes today!

Target US is "funding" the shutdown, by making a loan to Target Canada under the condition they get paid all the money for the costs to do so back before the other creditors see a penny.
The Target Canada employee "fund" is going to be 99% exhausted by giving the employees working notice instead of severance. If you quit to take another job, no severance, no EI.
The Target Canada "Key Employees" have something like $6.5 million set aside just for them to keep coming to work instead of resigning as officers and directors on the spot. Plus an agreement to keep paying their Directors and Officers liability insurance premiums. That's also off the top before any Canadian creditors get a penny.
The CCAA Monitor and their lawyers also have a priority charge for taking on this dog of about $6 million. Nice work if you can get it.
Nothing is going to be left for the creditors at all. This is a liquidating CCAA "restructuring", which means it was all set up in advance to avoid extra litigation and chaos while they do an orderly shutdown, to keep employees from looting, landlords from seizing goods, and to let the US parent walk away. There's even clauses in the Initial Order that forbid creditors from suing Target US, even if they have the contractual rights to do so, they'll have to wait until all this process stops in 4-5 years.
