I'm booked for two track days, May 18/19, with Keigwins at Thunderhill. Exciting! Never been there before! And so I need some advice on best places to stay. I'm just looking for clean, simple, and cheap. Oh, and I much prefer someplace close to downtown, so one can walk to have dinner... and a glass of wine or two... and not have the complication of a long trip back to the motel.
The Keigwins site lists a bunch of motels, almost all of which are on Humbolt Ave, right off I-5 (as is typical): Baymont, Studio 6, Motel 6, Holiday Inn Express, Days Inn, Super 8. It kinda looks like the only 'downtown' motel is the Economy Inn.
Any recommendations? Any bad experiences that would lead to advice on places to avoid? And is the town just small enough that you can walk anywhere you need to anyway?
p.s. Anyone ridden 162 / Alder Springs Rd / Forest Rd 7 / Mendicino Pass Rd west of Willows across to Covelo and eventually 101? It's obviously paved (from google maps observation), and it looks stupidly twisty... and I do plan to combine touring with the track day outing! The Destination Highways Nor Cal map shows it as recommended for the first part, then it peters out into a dotted line? Advice?
edit: ^^^ I shouldn't have been so lazy - a bit more investigation shows that the central 36 miles FS7 is unpaved...
