It is with extreme sadness that I am posting this in my "corner" here on AMF.
There has been a fatality at a Colorado Springs MSF course.
I will not speculate on details- what was given to me is not very detailed- but here are some tidbits that were passed on to me by one of the regional coordinators in my state:
-victim was a young female
-student ran off the range and impacted a bush/small tree and fell/was thrown onto curbing
-student's head impacted ground
-preliminary reports indicate an improperly fitting helmet as the major contributor to the injuries that resulted in death (head injuries)
-the helmet was student owned (not a MSF helmet)
-helmet was dislodged/detached from student during crash
-student passed away 3 days later as result of the head trauma
Please folks, make sure your helmet fits. SNUGLY. If you do not know how a helmet is supposed to fit, ask someone who does. Start at the manufacturer's website or go to one of the many good online helmet retailers. Also, make sure you have a undamaged helmet. A helmet that you wore during a fall/crash is NO GOOD. Repeat NO. GOOD.
This also goes for those spare helmets some of us have for passenger use. Make sure they are given a helmet that is in a good enough condition that YOU would use on your own head. But make sure it fits THEM.
As far as the accidents during the MSF goes, this is the 3rd (if I recall) fatality in the almost 30 years that there has been an MSF course.
God speed to the young woman and may her family find peace and solace from this terrible tragedy. I wish the best of luck in recovering from this incident to the 2 instructors that were administering the course at which this occurred.
