I figured I would share a neat trick to balance single sided rear wheels. This worked for my VFR and will probably for other single sided swignarm bikes like Triumph, BMW, ….
I bought a inexpensive motorcycle static wheel balancer from Harbor Freight. It has two cones with set screws you mount the tire on. It is designed for front wheels and bikes with regular rear swingarms.
What I did was buy a piece of 1/2 threaded rod and two 1/2 nuts. I screwed one nut onto the rod, slid the cone down, put the wheel on, dropped a 1 1/4 inch 1/2 socket into the wheel hub, and then screwed the other nut down snug.
The socket fits neatly in the hub and the cone on the other side centers the wheel around the rod. This is significantly more stable than using the set screws in the cones. I thought I would have to file the threads smooth for the rollers, but it didn’t have to in the end.
