Each year I am noticing that more & more bicyclists are pushing their luck on the streets. Last evenings commute to work provided yet another example.
To paraphrase Section 183 of the Motor Vehicle Act, cyclists have the same rights & responsibilites as any other vehicle occupying a road way [see attachment if you are curious]
Despite this law I am confronted with close quarters situations with cyclists at least once every two weeks.
Last night I was traveling on the Saanich Peninsula, west bound on Mt. Newton X Rd. [just past the White Spot off of the Pat Bay Hwy]. I'm travelling slow as I am the third vehicle turning left on the advance turning arrow. The car in front of me passes the White Spot and SLOWLY proceeds into a residential driveway. I continue to travel at a relatively slow pace 40kph to 50kph westbound on Mt. Newton. Two female cyclists [parading their flashy tour de France spandex] are also proceeding in the same direction on the right hand side of the road. They are grouped about 15ft to 20ft apart as the three of us approach the intersection of Mt. Newton X Rd and Central Saanich Rd.
As a rule and general respect for cyclists, I always give them their fair share of the road. Lets face it, a single track vehicle doesn't take up that much room so its easy to share the road. FWIW, I used to race road bikes when I was in highschool and now I occaisionally ride my mountain bike on the streets, so I have a strong understanding of what it's like to share the road as a cyclist.
Getting back to my little rant. As I approach the woman in the lead & the intersection of the road I slow my bike even more because she is swerving a bit and I don't trust the situation given the proximitry of the intersection. I'm about 20ft on her left quarter and closing. In a continous series of events she glances over her shoulder at me, whips her left arm out in a piss poor example of a hand turning signal, and proceeds to cut in front of me to turn left at the intersection.
I roll off the throttle a little bit and slowly move from the left track of the road onto the double yellow line and look directly at her [through my full face & dark visor, so there wasn't much eye contact... ]. She continues to crowd me while staring me down with a scowl. We are 10ft apart now. So I continue to slowly proceed on the yellow and look at her. At two arm lengths away from my right "bow" she gives me a snarl "ASSHOLE" that I can clearly hear while wearing 33db earplugs under a full face helmet with a closed visor.
Wait a minute. I'M the ASSHOLE???
Little Miss Bitch pulls this amazing display of navigation and I'm supposed to be the one at fault?? Quite obviously she [along with many other cyclists on the road] has no fucking clue what the laws of the road, or the laws of physics entail.
In the event that a similar situation occurs in the future and said cyclist ends up being RUN OVER [subsquently broken up and burned to shit by my 512lb motorcycle] I will immediately stop and call the police. I will ensure that charges of "Undue Care & Attention" and "Reckless Driving" are filed against said cyclist. I will then personally sue said cyclist for any damages that occur to my property due to their lack of compliance with the law. I will personally sue the person because I bet dollars to doughnuts that THEY do not have to purchase ANY insurance to operate THEIR vehicle on a public road. Do they? No. They DO NOT.
WTF is up with these people? I simply don't understand. This happens all the time here with these freaks. I agree with cyclists sharing the road and enjoying the benefits of our highway systems & road ways. But come on people, riding 4 abreast and completely blocking a traffic lane is in complete contravention of the MVA. Last summer while riding from Kaslo to Nelson I had to cross the yellow to avoid hitting one of these freaks in a group of 10 that were taking up 3/4 of the highway lane.
The ironic part of all of this is the HUGE public out cry and media embelishment that occurs when a cyclist is hit on the road. As I stated above, I have many kilometres of road cycling experience, and I wish no cyclist any harm. However, I think some of these suicidal silly fuckers need to be run over and then taken to court before they wake up and realize their lack of respect for others plying the road systems.
Ok. Rant over. But one of those tight panted little jerks are going to end up in a lot of pain one day.
