Magic or Math?

1. ## Magic or Math?

Let's see if you can figure this out. Good Luck !

2. simple. The values always end up to be a multiple of 9. And although it looks like there are a ton of symbols, pay attention to the multiples of 9. Same symbol.,

3. that symbol changes everytime you go back and try again so that it looks like the answer changes every time... pretty cool!

Yep... this thing has been around for quite some time... the first version I saw of it was actually a HTML page with Java... that one operated slightly differently... and it was more complex than this Flash one, if I remember correctly. This Flash one has all the multiples of 9 as the same symbol...the Java one actually had different symbols... but how it worked was it did a rough check of how far down you scrolled in order to look at the symbol the number you chose corresponded to, then guessed the closest multiple of 9's symbol... so that one did sometimes get it wrong... this Flash one is foolproof.

6. Here's the math for that:

Let x = the first digit
Let y = the second digit

# = xy

They tell you to add each digit (x+y) and subtract this from the orginal number (10x + y). X is multiplied by ten because it is the first digit. So the formula for the calculation is:

# = 10 x + y - (x+y)

Simplified:

# = 9x

Whatever you chose for x (1 through 9), will be a factor of 9. All the numbers that are a factor of 9 have identical pictures.
