Usually they start with a basic skills course from a
college, then do an apprenticeship for a few years
    working for an experienced mechanic.

If you're more of a hobbyist, there's usually a few
"intro to motormechanics" courses that places
like BCIT and some of the BCSB people put on.

You could get a good start by going to BCIT and
picking up their bike mechanic textbooks and
    thumbing through that.

I've got a copy of one from a few years ago
you're welcome to look at to see if it's worth

I think Bean took a motorcycle mechanic course at BCIT. PM him about it.

There's loads of info on your bike Eric. I think Jamie's page even has a detailed section on how to do an engine rebuild. Apparently 2-strokes are fairly easy to work with. Maybe the 2 of us should get together sometime and learn the basics and then we could both rebuild our bikes in the winter. My friend has a huge 2 car garage that is empty. I'm sure he would let us work there. We just need the tools and the knowledge

Contact Fairview college in Fairview Alberta. They run a 28 week general motorcycle program and a Harley Davidson course. They have a web site with all the details prices etc.
