Some things to consider the next time you hear someone say that they accept the risks when they decide to ignore the rules of the road and end up crashing...after all it's my life & I'll do what I want..it only affects me.
Not quite...if you crash it affects the witnesses who see you go down & destroy your bike in front of them..It can traumatize them for life. Case in point..the driver of a pickup that was hit head-on by a Sportbike rider who was double the posted limit and over a double solid line on a blind corner, still has nightmares 5 years after the crash .He pulls off to the shoulder skaking every time he sees a bike coming at him over the same stretch of roadway.
The witnesses who see parts of your body scattered over the roadway carry these pictures for life.
The EMTs who speed to the scene to try to get you to the hospital for treatment...who get covered in your blood, who tape & bandage body parts to try to save them
The hospital staff who do what they can to repair what you have done to yourself.
The crash investigators who spend up to a year to complete the investigation, spend time in court prosecuting anyone who caused the crash (if they survive).
The Victims Services folks who try to help those you love cope with what has happened.
The Cop who goes to your home to tell your family that their lives will be changed forever because you just killed yourself or will have a terrible period of pain & rehabilitation...assuming your body is salvagable. Talk to a Cop who has done this & see how it still affects them to this day.
Your family..the destruction of their lives because someone they loved has been ripped from their lives forever..
Your friends who gather at a memorial service or funeral & keep asking "why...he was such a great guy?"
Your employer who now has to face replacing you or having to carry you financially till you possibly can return to work.
The tow truck and storage lot staff who pick up the bike bits& personal property & hold them for someone to pick up.
The insurance staff (life and vehicle) who process your policy to make payouts.
The roads crews who replace the barriers, signs etc you may have hit, clean up the mess and repair the scraps & gouges in the road.
The news reporters who publish your crash story & possibly your obituary,.
I won't even get into the cost of all of this stuff financially....wouldn't know where to start counting.
I know you don't want to hear this because you are a great rider and never crash...all the dead and paralyzied riders who went down were thinking the same thing. Do you think any of them crashed on purpose?. If you crash it is NOT just about you...you are worth a lot to many people and your loss affects many more folks than you thought...however how you ride is up to you. The consequences of your decisions could hurt a lot of people who care for you. It's NOT just about you. Let's hope you "can handle the truth".
