My '00 VFR800 with 48,000km has spung a leak of some sort.
So over the last month or so I have been noticeing far to much 'fling' gunk on my bike. I run a scottoiler so I made the assumption that this was the problem. From week to week I played with it but I could not seem to put a stop to it. Then two days ago I noticed a drop of oil under my bike in a parking garage. This was probably the first time that the bike had been parked on an angle since the problem began.
So I start following the gunk and pulling part off the bike. Off comes the fairing (11bolts), speed sensor (2), clutch (3) and the guard over the front sprocket (2). What did I see? Well lets just say that every cubic inch of space in there was fillled wih gunk. The oil seems to be comming from behind the sprocket and is being flung onto the chain. This was why I had thought that my scottoiler was the problem. I chose not to remove the sprocket since doing so is a pain and I would have to put everything back anyway.
So what am I looking at here?
The bike is running fine without any new noises/vibrations so I think that it is safe to assume that the bearings are not an issue. So could it be just a worn out seal?
I laughed out loud when I realized that my front sprocket still shows no signs of wearing out even after 48,000 km.
