Here's the deal: I'm riding home from work on Thursday and just as I get to the my driveway, coolant starts pouring out from somewhere near the front of my 03 F4i. I get off the bike and watch in shock as coolant keeps pouring out.
After the coolant stops coming out, I phone the dealer to see if they have an idea of what the problem is. Maybe the F4i has some inherent coolant system problem I'm not aware of (like the CCT).
Dealer says they would have to look at it. Fair enough.
I take off the left fairing and start the bike up after making sure that there's coolant in the overflow tank. Looks like the coolant is coming out from one of the fins on the back of the radiator underneath the fan.
Time is running short before RMS closes, which is only a few kms nearby, so I head out, pulling over a couple of times to make sure I don't overheat and damage the engine.
The dealer checks it today and notifies me that it is coming
from a hole in the back of the radiator. The hole appears like a hole caused from a screwdriver but hard to say.
Did someone tamper with the rad? Very unlikely as I was the last person to do maintenance on the bike. I did the 6000km oil change on it which was 2400kms ago. The bike has 8400kms on it right now. I have a nice and quiet stock exhaust so it couldn't have been a disgruntled neighbor who took the time to take off the fairing and jab the helpless radiator with a screwdriver.
It didn't happen while I was at work because it was not leaking any coolant before I left and I park within sight of the parking atttendant of the lot . He would of noticed anyone f#$%#ing around with my bike. I live 18kms away from work so I would have seen some coolant steaming off the exhaust pipes if this was the case.
My only explaination of how the hole was caused is simply a manufacturers defect or a rock or road debris that somehow richocheted inbetween the engine and rad behind the fairing. Has anyone ever heard of that??? That must be a one in a million chance.
The main reason why I bought an F4i is Honda's long standing reputation for reliability and quality. I even bought a 5 year extended warranty at the time I bought the bike just in case. I was told by the dealer that doing routine maintenance does not void my warranty.
My question is has anyone had experience with a Honda warranty claim? I find out on Tuesday if it is going to be covered by them. If they don't , then does ICBC cover something like this and I pay my $300 comp deductible?
It is going to cost $1000 for parts and labour to get this fixed. If Honda denies warrranting it on Tuesday and I have to go thru ICBC, it looks like it will be the end of the riding season for me as in a couple weeks I'm heading to Ontario for a month (work) and won't be back till Oct.
I'm heading to the dealer on Saturday to look at the rad hole myself. If the metal around the hole shows an explosion (caused from high pressure??), then I guess my chances are good that it is a manufacturer defect but if it is imploding (caused from something puncturing it) than maybe my chances isn't so rosey.
Thanks for listening to my dilema and any feedback would be appreciated.
