After riding the Honda RC211V for the first time on Tuesday at the Catalunya circuit in Spain, Colin Edwards may need a plastic surgeon to remove the smile from his face.
”It was awesome,” Edwards said today from his home in Conroe, Texas. “I got so accustomed to the Aprilia and the way it works, I forgot what last year’s bike felt like. Everything on that thing [the RC211V] is so sano, everything is in the right place. It’s hard to describe. It’s like when you open that new toy and take it out of the box and everything’s perfect.”
Although the track was “green” and he was painting black marks in every corner, Edwards didn’t waste any time in getting on the race pace. His best lap was a 1:45.3, a 10th of a second quicker than Valentino Rossi’s best lap from this year’s MotoGP at the Spanish racetrack.
“It was the first time in four years that I’d used a 17-inch front tire, so I was a bit concerned about that,” Edwards said. “I was no where near the limit, but the front never moved. It was incredible. It felt really good, really comfortable. It actually felt slower than the Aprilia because the Aprilia always wanted to loop out. This thing would barely wheelie. It was a lot like going from the RC45 to the twin [RC51]. Same thing – you can just concentrate on where you’re going.”
Edwards gets a break in his schedule until taking part in the Aprilia ride day in Florida, November 15-16. His first “real” test on the RC211V will be at Valencia in Spain, December 9-11.
“This test was just to get the handlebars in the right place... things like that,” Edwards said.
