i'm sure this has probably been done before, but here goes anyway:

Get outta the fast lane!!
I'm using Candid Security & Wireless Tech Inc. (604) 864-8709 in Abbotsford.
Monitoring is less than $20/month. Look around because once it's installed it doesn't matter who is monitoring it if they are out in the Valley, up Sunshine Coast, etc as long as they have quick police notification in the event of an alarm and call your cell phone promptly.
Mike who works for them used to have his own company called CAN-AM Security but he got tired of running the show so sold the company. He still works for them.
Anyway, I bought a Paradox Digiplex system from him for great pricing and installed everything myself. http://www.paradox.ca/ (go to products). Now it's called Digiplex NE. When I was shopping around I had pretty much decided on a http://www.dsc.com/ system but after looking at the specs I found the Digiplex system was much more advanced. For instance you can add key card entry, the motion sensors are digital so adjustable from the control panel plus they have dual element pet-friendly sensors, wireless options, logging, 4-wire bus system so you can add devices anywhere on the bus (4 motion sensors could be on same wire run for instance), etc. For a full house system you're looking at around $500-1000 depending on complexity.
Phone around when you decide on a brand alarm system for best component pricing. If you have an installer do the work be careful as there are good ones and ones that do shoddy work.
When installing motion sensors you have to do so thinking like a thief. Don't make anything easily accessible.
A different company installed an alarm system in my wife's office which is an entire floor of an office building downtown. Anyway, they installed a motion sensor bolted to the wall close to the elevators pointing into the space. It was funny because I showed them how to foil that sensor... I just walked up under it, slowly lifted a piece of regular paper up and moved the paper in front of the sensor while another friend was walking all around their reception area. Goof-ball installer that was.
Think like a thief.

hey, that's great advice peter.
did candid supply the system, install it and handle the monitoring?
I wanted one after a break in... I made the mistake of calling Alarm Force. They don't sell you anything or bring anyone buy to show you what it is they do. It's all smoke and mirrors and if you fall for their appointment a guy will show up with a couple of velcro pads and a box to stick in your closet. He'll take 10 minutes throwing up a couple sensors and call it a day and BAM you just agreed to their home security. The people on the phone don't know what they are selling so they just try to force you through to the installation part.
I called ADT and they seemed top notch... but I live in an appt and my chance of moving was too great.
iono.... i guess that's what I have insurance for.
