O'YOUNG TO COMPETE IN THE 2004 PORSCHE INFINEON CARRERA CUP ASIA
For Immediate Release -- March 2, 2004
Darryl O'Young, a 23-year-old Chinese Canadian race car driver from Vancouver, B.C., recently signed with Team Jebsen, to compete the full 2004 Porsche Infineon Carrera Cup Asia.
With the attention of the international motorsport community firmly focused on China, Jebsen & Company Limited has scored a major coup in lining up O'Young as a candidate for its first assault on the Porsche Infineon Carrera Cup Asia title.
Sponsored by Blue Girl Beer and Puma, O'Young will make a championship effort with his Jebsen-entered Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Car. It will be a busy year for O'Young as the series is scheduled for 11 races kicking off as a support race for the Petronas Malaysia Formula One Grand Prix. Other races on the calender for the year include a support race for China's first ever Formula One weekend in Shanghai and also races in Thailand, Korea, Beijing, and finishing the season off at the world renowned, Macau Grand Prix.
Commented Robby Niermann, General Manager of Porsche Centre Hong Kong -- Jebsen & Co., Ltd.: "We are looking forward to having Darryl on board to spearhead our Porsche Infineon Carrera Cup Asia campaign. It is a tremendous opportunity to nurture the talent of this young driver, who we feel has a strong future in the sport. We are hoping for a powerful and successful partnership.
O'Young is thrilled to be racing in Asia, particularly China: "I am very proud of my Chinese heritage," he said. "I am really looking forward to competing in such an important series, and I feel ready to capatalize on this great opportunity overseas. I am especially greatful for the support Jebsen, Blue Girl Beer, and Puma has given me for the 2004 season."
Although new to racing in Asia, O'Young already has considerable experience under his belt, having started out in karts at the tender age of eight and going on to become a Canadian and a US National Karting Champion. Since then, he has notched up an impressive tally of racing wins in North America. He finished third overall last year in the ultra-competitive Formula Renault 1600 US Pro Championship, leading the series for the first 9 races of the 13-round season.
