Over the last four or five months BCCOM has been investigating the possibility of making lane splitting legal for motorcycles.
Things are starting to look very positive. The Police have been asked for their opinion on the possibility of a change in the law to make this possible, and the general consensus of both motorcycle and non motorcycle cops has been very favourable.
Specifically, BCCOM is lobbying for the right for motorcycles to be able to pass stationary or slow moving traffic, by splitting between marked lanes of traffic where it is safe to do so. They will also strive to extend this to allow motorcycles to go to the front of a line of traffic stopped at lights. This would be a very significant safety advantage if conducted properly.
There is still a way to go, but with Washington State considering similar changes in traffic rules it seems likely that BCCOM may well achieve another significant concession for motorcycle users.
