I just watched a rather entertaining documentary. It was a discussion regarding nasa's "conspiracy" to fake the Apollo landings on the moon. What set it apart from similar docs was that it came to a solid conclusion. There was no grey area. In the end they came out and stated that all the theories were wrong and that there is absolutely no evidence that man did not walk on the moon. Well DUH... But what ticked me off was after the writers had gained some of my respect through their unapologetic style and attention to detail they lost ALL of my respect during the last 10 seconds of the show.
They compared the walking on the moon to Columbus's discovering that the earth was round. I am sick of hearing this and so in an attempt to put down this false myth I thought that I would post this rant.
Columbus DID NO SUCH THING. People have known that the world was spherical for THOUSANDS OF YEARS. Plato knew it. The ancient Chinese knew it. EVERY Moslem has known it. Have fun finding Mecca with the flat-earth model! They also had a very accurate idea of its size. In fact Columbus was WRONG and was a bad navigator. There is even evidence that he didn't know how to use his sextant properly. His WRONG math made him believe not that the earth was round, but that is was smaller than it is. Nobody had tried to get to China by going west because they though that they would have to cross a gigantic ocean covering half the planet. Columbus's wrong math told him that china wasn't nearly that far away. He was not a genius trying to prove a theory. He was a foolhardy explorer who was incorrect about pretty much everything to do with navigation and geography.
I don't know why everyone thinks that up until 1492 people thought that the world was flat. It probably has something to do with highschool textbooks. It doesn't take much to prove the earth is round. In fact with only the most basic of tools you can even calculate its approximate size. It's so simple that we look down on people who think the earth is flat. The astronomers, navigators and philosophers who lived pre-1492 were not idiots. They were not stupid. We should give them the credit that they deserve.
If you want the evidence then I encourage you to go to the library and read ANY book on the history of astronomy, navigation or philosophy. Just stay away from the grade-10 history textbooks.
