i'm wondering if anyone can offer some advice in regards to a bent front rotor.
i bought my bike second hand and did not notice that one of the front rotors was bent from what looks like to be a disc lock. the braking surface seems to be fine/straight but the center area (the star shaped thingy) is what is bent, or rather one arm of it.
there is no pulsing or grabbing in the brake at all and it actually feels like butter. out of concern of it letting loose and sending me into a high speed stoppie i stopped by carter honda last fall and a couple of guys took a look at it. they gave the wheel a spin and said that it was fine and not to worry about it. i myself haven't noticed any unusual drag and the brake is silent.
i pulled the bike out of storage a couple of weeks ago. i washed, waxed and changed the oil and put in motul semi synth. a day or two after getting back on the road i noticed a burning rubber type smell. it didn't smell like brake dust/smoke and i chalked it up as wax or soap on the motor or in the foam of the fairings burning off or maybe something to do with the synth oil (yeah i know i'm grasping here ) it's a rare occasion to get a whiff of the mystery smoke as i notice it on the very odd occasion, only when i'm newly stopped, like at a light or pulling up home. it last's a couple of seconds then is gone. i've had the bike sitting and running with my nose in every nook and cranny trying to figure out what/where it is coming from but never seem to smell it while sitting.
well the smell is still there and i started to investigate. i felt the front rotors a couple of times after stopping and the bent rotor side is slightly warmer to the touch, but ever so slightly, definitely not hot.
this being my first bike, could it be that it is brake dust and that it just smells diff on a bike due to diff materials used? either way i suspect it's the brakes.
if i replace the rotor do i need to ensure i find one that has the same degree of wear? my bike has about 8500kms. thx.
