Time was 9:30 PM, I was slowing down with signal on to turn right into the Tim Hortins parking lot in Guilford @ 152nd. st.. As usual I looked in my rear view mirror to keep an eye on following traffic. There was a grey Honda Accord (mid-late eighties) behind me that wasn't slowing down, until the last 30 feet where I saw his front end dive but no tire squeal, all the while I was starting to make my turn into the parking lot. I soon realized he wasn't going to stop in time.
I had to make a split second decision to either pull in quickly, or straighen out and boot it, I decided the safest thing to do was pull in, but too late, he tagged me hard from behind. We both pulled in and he asked me if I was OK. It was soon after he came out of his car that I realized he was DRUNK! I asked him if he had been drinking and he said that he had a "few". All of a sudden all those motorcycles deaths this year came to mind, and I knew I had to phone this bastard in.
He soon realized I was callin the cops, and asked me to just keep it between us, I told him no way! I saw him making his way back to his car, at the same time the 911 operator came on and I told her to write down the plate number because this guy was runnin on me. So he takes off and I tell her what direction he goes in and she hangs up. Seconds later I get a call from the Surrey RCMP asking me what happened, WTF????? So I tell the new operator what happened and she puts me on hold to call the first operator I talked to in Langley, after a few minutes she comes back and tells me the plate number I gave her is no good!!!
So there was nothing they could do, they just gave me a case# and told me to have a nice day I was OK, but the frame that is under my tailpeice is all bent up, as is my licence plate, my tire took the majority of the impact but is OK. So I ended up having a coffee, thinking what everyone would, what would I do different.
One thing I did do as soon as I got home was phone the police back, what a waste of time. I phoned Surrey first, but they said since Langley originally took the call I need to phone them. So I wait on hold for 5 minutes and talk to a Langley operator, SHE SAYS TO PHONE SURREY BACK!!
I explained to her that they took the call first, and that I gave the plate # to them (Langley) and maybe the operator wrote the plate down wrong, maybe they could listen to the 911 tape to verify? After being on hold for 5 more minutes she came back and told me that the Surrey 911 lines went down when I called and they were unable to help me.
So now I am fucked, my tailpeice looks like it was made by Picaso, and my respect for the law is at an all time low. I know this is a long post folks but I just hope some may learn from it. If this were to happen again I would have done the following...
1: I would have blocked the prick in by parking my bike infront of his car (I have full coverage)
2: I will carry a paper and pen on me from now on to jot down plate numbers.
3: I suppose I could have avoided him hitting me if I booted it around the turn faster, but then what about the traffic in the lot? Sometimes you just can't help it?
What do you folks suggest? could I have avoided it? What would you do? Lets try to learn from this, thanks...
