Last week, while I was sleeping, my '04 F4i was stolen and recovered. I thought I'd relate the circumstances to add to the bcsb knowledge base.
The bike had been parked in its usual place on a busy street downtown, with a disc lock and full bike cover.
The VPD woke me at 5 am to tell me the bad news, but also to say they had found the bike in a van, with the cover and disc lock still attached. Damage appears to be relatively minor: broken side mirror, cracked windscreen, and dented gas tank.
The police said they had a couple of suspects, one in custody. The bike was held to be dusted for fingerprints and is now at an ICBC approved repair shop.
The detective with the stolen auto squad who was assigned to the file said this is high season for bike thefts, and that if my bike hadn't been found when it was, it likely would have been parted out.
I'll be ramping up my anti-theft tactics - though the police say bikes get stolen even when they have an alarm system, are chained to a post, or are in "secure" parking.
