So whos all gonig down to the abby airshow this year? its this weekend . august 13-15. lots of sweet planes . good weather !
Why pay, you can go for free, just you wont get to see all the planes up close.
You can park your bike/car on a road that goes past the runway, and watch from there, there is also a road that goes up the hill, lots of people watch from there too. The hill is nice because the planes seem like they are flying really low.
Or pay the $25 and wait in huge lines of traffic. Not sure if theres still lots of traffic, Last time I paid to see was about 5 years ago.
Problem with the hill last year was that some of the trees are growing back(partially blocking view of runway) so it might be worse this year.
EDIT: or we could get 15 of us to chip in $5.50 and cram into someones van. ($80 for a carload)
Sorry, I can't be supportive of the airshow anymore. I attended every year for 20 years straight while I was growing up, and watched it grow from a great little show intended to raise awareness of General Aviation and the Canadian Forces in the community into this corporate monolith whose only motivation is now *profit*. Screw anyone who doesn't bring their wallet to the show, loaded with cash. I mean really... Beer Gardens? WTF? Does every public event have to be soaked in alcohol in order to be profitable? And what's with $4 pop, $8 hot dogs, etc.? Get real. For $25 at the gate I want a free lunch and reserved seating.
Even those of us who volunteered our aircraft year after year for static display at our own cost got progressively worse and worse treatment until most of us have given up attending at all. We used to get a few free gallons of gas (What, $10 per plane?) given to us in exchange for providing a general aviation flyby... Basically, real people flying real airplanes. We represented what the average Joe could aspire to. Soon they stopped giving us the gas, then stopped asking us to fly, just to park our airplanes where the public could walk around and look at them. That was fine too, until jackasses started pawing the airplanes and damaging them ("here, Billy, run along this airplane's wing while the pilot isn't around" (The pilot *was* around, and I almost strangled Billy's father)).
In any case, the best acts are Bud Granley flying his Harvard, Bud and his son Ross flying a dual acrobatic routine in two different kinds of Yak (-18 and -52), and the Snowbirds. The first two you can see in a much more intimate setting at the Chilliwack Flight Fest. The Snowbirds you can watch from the road.
Go free, or don't go at all. It's a money pit.

I live basically on the "hill", so for me it's always free.............
Too bad you dont own that house right on the hill, not much seating so if he let people sit in his back yard for $5 bucks he could clean up.
actually I live at the base of the hill, across from the farm, so I get a pretty clear view as it is.... and no I'm not selling tickets.....
Wasnt suggesting that you should, I know a couple of your neighbours do sell seats on their lawn though.

I'm going Sunday, and that's only because I get into one of them fancy-shmancy reserved suites (free booze/food/hot chicks ) for free.

Sparring speed is a matter of simple physics:
The height of your flight is inversely proportionate to the mass of your ass.
its $25 bones and Crass Tengu i'll be there everyday . the company my pappy owns runs it so i'll be bombin around in a golf cart and in regards to spikes comment about the beer gardens the public wanted it .. it took work to get a beer garden passed but the reason it was started was for the publics demand.
