I lived in Vancouver for about a year back in 1988 (12 yrs old at that time). I then moved to Edmonton with my family and have been living here since then (I'm 27 now).
I have a few relatives that live in Vancouver, one being my mom's older brother (my uncle). He owns a chinese restaurant in Richmond. He also co-owns a factory which makes those mini totem poles for Stanley Park. His wife (my aunt) is a computer operator. Among them, they have 3 children, which obviously are my direct cousins, and are all in their 20's.
Whenever I go to Vancouver for a visit and stay at their place, my uncle is seldom home. He's always manning his restaurant or at his factory. If my aunt is not at work, she'll be at home doing work remotely. So seems like they're workholics. The live in a modest home in Vanc, that sorta overlooks Richmond.
What do all of you guys do for a living in order to survive the high standard of living in Vancouver? My thought is that you either have to own your own successful business (ie, popular restaurant, popular clothing store, firms, etc.) or you are a successful professional (Executives, Dentist, Doctors, Lawyers, Pharmacist, Engineers, etc.) . I've always wanted to move back to Vancouver but I'm just afraid I won't be able to survive there.
I'm in the IT field and I do server/network stuff.
